In continuation of my telegram io,87 of
7th instant, I have the honour to inform you that
confirmation has been received of the reports of the
death of Kr.3.^.Phillips, the representative of the
Asiatic Petroleum Company at Naming.

The first reports of his capture by pirates
reached me on !lay Slat, and I imediately requested the
Commissioner of Foreign Affairs to urge the Canten
Government to telegraph instructions to the Civil and
Military Authorities in Kranged to take all possible
steps to secure his early releaDO, I supported this
written request with personal representations on two
occasions, and also telegraphed direct to the Civil and
Military Governors. The Canton Government fully recog-
nised the seriousness of the case and telegraphed
suitable instructions to both Governors of Kuangsi as
well as to the Commissioner of Foreign Affairs at Muchow.
I have since received two telegrass from General Li
Tang-jen {
} describing the steps taken by him,
It was not until June 7th that the Company
